An Update for My Readers

First, a recap for new visitors: Greetings! I’m a science fiction romance author, former SFR blogger, geek, and suburban mom. I wrote about sci-fi romance for eight years at The Galaxy Express. I covered books, TV shows, and obscure movies like ROMIE-O AND JULIE-8 (yeah, I had to plug that weirdo film again because I’m a super nerd like that). Along the way, I became an author of my favorite genre because who can resist that kind of fun?!

Since releasing my last sci-fi romance, Julie & Winifred’s Most Excellent Adventure, I took a hiatus from social media to concentrate on writing. The decline of Twitter torched my interest in being online, but Bluesky looked promising, so I bid my time until it reached its current form. You can now find me there at heathermassey.blsky.social.

Writing projects

I have two books in progress. One is a non-SFR story, and I’m going to be coy about the premise, except to say that it’s related to the topic of a previous post of mine, The Glory Days of Bare-breasted, Bare-knuckle Boxing.

My other book is about my experience as an adoptee. The idea to write it came after I met my birth mother in 2022—a phenomenal adventure. Since traditional publishing is all but impossible these days, I will self-publish it. The book just needs editing and a cover.

Relatedly, earlier this year I wrote an essay about being an adoptee for Severance Magazine. A Tale of Two Adoptees is my response to a potentially harmful bill introduced by Republican Congressman Rob Wittman—also an adoptee. He’s my representative, unfortunately, but Democrats in Virginia’s 1st District hope to #FliptheFirst in 2026.

Neighbors For Change logo, which reads as N4C

In some very cool news, this year I became a volunteer writer for Neighbors For Change, a grassroots advocacy group in my county that champions progressive causes and candidates.

This group releases a bimonthly newsletter with content that focuses on hyperlocal news and politics. One of my recent pieces is Meet the Democratic Candidates Hoping to Unseat Wittman in 2026 (heh, see what I did there?). To read my articles and all the other great content, sign up for the N4C newsletter.

In the past, I primarily focused on writing about science fiction romance. But times have changed, and so have I. These days, I’m going to expand beyond SFR to a mix of geek stuff, local politics/issues, and social justice topics.

Speaking of geek…

Geek Fun

For those of you who are discovering me for the first time, I’m a hardcore geek whose interests range from old-school shows like Space Battleship Yamato, Thunderbirds, Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, and Super Friends, to current fare like See You Yesterday, superhero movies and shows, and the fourteenth series of Doctor Who featuring Ncuti Gatwa (love him to pieces!). I also adore SF/SFR books and comics.

This past year, I was finally able to start watching the spectacular Space Battleship Yamato reboot. Talk about a dream come true! I never thought that Yamato, which first appeared on Japanese TV in 1974, would ever be redone in this Gen X fan’s lifetime. I wrote about its impact on me in a Galaxy Express post. For the best Yamato coverage ever, check out Cosmo DNA, the premier U.S. fandom archive for all things Space Battleship Yamato and Star Blazers.

So that’s my geek life in a nutshell. Now for the movies I’m dying to see but that haven’t been made yet: DC’s Wonder Twins, a Mystery Men reboot, and a space opera battle of the bands.

That’s all for now. I look forward to writing about the above topics and more both here and at Bluesky. See you around!
